Efforts to lower credibility of 'truth-revealing' media condemned

Last Updated 06 August 2017, 18:24 IST
Chief Minister’s media advisor Dinesh Amin Mattu has said that deliberate attempts are made to lower the credibility of the media, even though the media is bringing out the truth.

He was speaking during the installation programme of the new office-bearers of the Press Club for the period of 2017-20 in Madikeri on Sunday.

Mattu said that newspapers cannot be sold by printing lies. “If any newspaper does so, its credibility will be lowered,” he said and expressed his concern over media not being able to cover as many reports on pro-societal development as possible, the main reason being that journalism is turning from an ideology-oriented job into a business.

‘Introspection needed’

He, meanwhile, felt that scribes must make an introspection as to what extent they have been contributing to retain the credibility of journalism. “Media and the republic should go hand-in-hand. Journalists should gain in-depth knowledge on different subjects, develop sensitivity and should come out of cynicism”, he added.

Additional Deputy Commissioner M Satish Kumar said that the system will be better when the media alerts bureaucrats about administrative flaws. However, the technology should not override morale, he added.

Press Club president Ajjamada Ramesh Kuttappa also spoke. Founder president Ananthashayana presided over the programme. Prem and troupe sand folk songs on the occasion.

General secretary K B Manjunath and treasurer Rejith Kumar were present at the programme.
