Devgad Island near Karwar to be state's second scuba diving hub

Murudeshwar to have snorkelling

In a few months, you can go scuba-diving in Devgad Island near Karwar town and snorkelling in Murudeshwar. While snorkelling is likely to open in November, scuba diving could start by December.

The Uttara Kannada district administration and the Tourism Department hope to attract tourists who usually head for Goa or Andaman and Nicobar Islands to enjoy these water sports. Presently, scuba diving is available only in Netrani Island near Murudeshwar and people have to reach there by boat. The place attracts large crowds.

Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner, S S Nakul, said Devgad Island with its rich coral biodiversity and aquatic life could become an attractive destination for scuba diving. What’s more, the water sport will be offered there throughout the years, unlike in Netrani Island where the facility is closed during the monsoon.

Netrani Adventures, the Murudeshwar-based firm which conducts scuba diving in Netrani Island, is currently carrying out a feasibility study in Devgad Island. The study will help the district administration finalise the location.

The firm, however, may not conduct scuba diving in Devgad Island. The organiser will be finalised only after tendering, Nakul said.

Like in Netrani Island, the space for scuba diving in Devgad Island will be clearly defined. There will be trained guides and divers. All safety measures and precautions will be taken. The local administration will keep the Navy in the loop about the exact location and schedule of the water sports, he said.

The inauguration of snorkelling in November and scuba diving in December will be timed to coincide with cultural festivals in Karwar and Murudeshwar, respectively.
