Deficit rainfall likely to affect paddy cultivation in Mudigere taluk

There was a time when any visitor to Mudigere would be greeted by lush green paddy fields during rainy season. However, the situation has changed over the years where the growers are dependent on rain.

With the deficit rainfall, the paddy cultivation in Mudigere taluk is likely to be reduced to 50%.

The taluk should have received 70 to 80 inches of rainfall in the first week of August. However, the taluk has received an average of 50 inches of rainfall.

The deficit rainfall has been a set back to the farming activities in the taluk.

The deficit rainfall has affected the transplantation of paddy seedlings. Last year, the paddy was grown on 6,700 hectare during the kharif season. However, this year, paddy has been cultivated on only 3,900 hectare.

Though farmers had made preparations for cultivating paddy on the remaining 5,500 hectare, owing to the deficit rainfall, they could not take up.

Rudrayya, a farmer from Kaduvalli said, “Normally, the work on removing the weeds after transplantation of paddy seedlings are taken up in the first week of August. With the deficit rainfall, the preparation of paddy seedlings were delayed. Now, the seedlings are ready for transplantation. However, there is lack of water for paddy cultivation. If the region fails to get rainfall within a week, then paddy seedlings will go waste. We may have to purchase rice for our consumption next year,” he said.
