Cops launch awareness campaign in IT belt to check robberies

Last Updated 10 August 2017, 20:44 IST

The police have launched a 10-day awareness campaign in the city’s IT corridor to prevent techies and professionals from being trapped by professional gang of robbers.

The police have launched the campaign in view of increasing robberies being committed by unidentified cab drivers.

“We have been increasingly receiving complaints of robberies from techies and professionals. We decided to create awareness among techies to prevent them from being trapped by robbers,” DCP (Whitefield) Abdul Ahad told DH.

On the pretext of giving a lift in their cabs, robbers are targetting techies. They drive for a while and then threaten those inside the cab and rob them of their valuables including cash and ATM/credit cards.

IT corridor

The robbers have chosen the city’s IT corridor, which includes Whitefield, Marathahalli, Kadugodi and Hope Farm. They mostly operate during late nights and early hours. They chose professionals as they carry expensive gadgets and cash. The police suspect the involvement of inter-state gangs in these robberies.

The DCP has constituted a special team that will patrol IT campuses and residential areas. The police will circulate pamphlets and brochures to create awareness.

“We have also increased police presence at vulnerable locations to prevent robberies,” Ahad added.
