Rains, lightning claim six lives

Trees uprooted, normal life affected

Heavy winds at Jannadi near Bidkal Katte in Kundapur uprooted a huge tree which fell on a moving four-wheeler killing two persons. Nine others who were travelling in the vehicle sustained injuries.
The vehicle was on its way to Kadur from Navunda with the family members of Mohammed Khaza when the mishap occurred.

While Nawaz (23) was killed on the spot, Khaza (30) died on the way to the hospital. Shariyan (25), who suffered critical injuries has been shifted to Manipal hospital.
Two children were killed when lightning struck them. While a two-year-old girl was killed at Devalkunda in Kundapur taluk, a boy lost his life at Ajekar near Hebri.
Two-year-old Sinchana, daughter of Chandra Poojary and a resident of Devalkunda was playing near her house when lighting struck her. She was rushed to the hospital, but died on the way. Saroja, a housewife, who was in the vicinity too suffered burns due to lighting.

Abhilash (14), who was chatting with his parents in his home, lost his life when lightning struck him, at Kukkunje near Hebri. The sleepy town also received good rains between 3 pm and 4.30 pm.

Houses damaged
Three houses were damaged and nearly three quintal of rice stored in a house belonging to Anand Poojary at Shivapura in Hebri have been burnt when lightning struck. A cattle shed belonging to Anand Nayak too was reduced to ashes and the cattle died.

Disrupted
Power supply was disrupted in Hebri, Perdur, Shivapura, Muniyal and several other areas due to rains. Kundapur, Karkal, Padubidre, Hebri, Kaup and Alevoor too received heavy rains accompanied with gusty winds in the evening. Though Mangalore remained cloudy throughout the day, it did not rain in the City.
Two labourers were killed in a blast at Kadandale in Moodbidre. The deceased have been identified as Ansar (30) and Kumar (32), both from Kollam district in Kerala. The duo were getting ready to blast a rock in a quarry when lightning struck.  Due to the impact of the lightning, it is said that the blast occurred before it was supposed to, killing two. Five labourers suffered injuries in the mishap.
