A couple committed suicide in Kalasipalyam on Monday night, reportedly because they could not repay a Rs 46-lakh loan their son had taken from the local corporator.

Nanjundaswamy (48) and Pushpalatha (46), of Pipeline Road, Kalasipalyam, decided to end their lives as Aarya Srinivas, the Congress corporator of Hemmigepura ward, and his associates reportedly kept harassing them for repayment of the loan. The couple ran a hotel in Dodda Mavalli. Their son, Chandan, is said to have borrowed Rs 46 lakh from Srinivas and lost it in gambling. When he failed to repay the money, the corporator and his associates began pressuring the couple.

The “harassment” took a toll on them and they hanged themselves.

Their suicide emerged on Tuesday morning when Chandan, who had spent the night outside with friends, returned home. Neighbours called the police who rushed to the spot and shifted the bodies for post-mortem.

Police have found a death note in which the couple purportedly blamed their son, the corporator and others. On the basis of the suicide note, police booked Chandan, Srinivas and others for abetment to suicide. Further investigation is under way.
