Last Updated 24 August 2017, 20:51 IST

A local court on Wednesday convicted a Nigerian national of assaulting Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers in 2015.

Principal District and Sessions judge, Basavaraj Sappananavar, sentenced Adams Darmez to two-and-a-half-years' imprisonment and fined him Rs 10,000. Public prosecutor Channappa Harasuru said it was the first instance in Karnataka when a foreign national was convicted of assault on police officers.

Suspecting Darmez of circulating counterfeit notes, CID sleuths had raided a KFC restaurant in Banaswadi, where he was hiding, around 10 pm on March 12, 2015. In a bid to flee, Darmez picked up a chair and assaulted CID constables, Shivakumar and Lingaraju, besides a restaurant worker Manju.

The sleuths overpowered him and took him into custody. They booked him for circulating fake notes and assaulting policemen on duty. The case was registered at the jurisdictional Banaswadi police station. Interrogation showed that Darmez had a fake passport.
