Inclusion of category for Commonwealth Games has thrilled the pugilist

The inclusion of 48 kg category in 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast has infused new life in Mary Kom. The five-time world champion was full of beans during the national camp at Indira Gandhi Sports Complex and didn’t rule out 2020 Olympics, provided the 48 kg is revived in women’s category.

Mary, who missed the berth for Rio, hoped the 48 kg would be included in the Tokyo Olympics. “Then I can say the Gold will be mine,” an excited Mary, a 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, told Deccan Herald.

“It was very difficult for me to participate in the 51 kg category at London. All my life I had trained in 48 kg category, so increasing weight made me vomit as I also had my gall bladder removed. Presently I am thrilled that Commonwealth Games has got the 48 kg category.

“But 2020 Olympics is very much in my mind. I have been regularly training. But 48 kg will make a lot of difference.”

The 34-year-old, who was appointed one of the national observers, wanted the national camp to be organised better.  “We were informed at a very short notice. This never used to happen before.”

Also present was experienced pugilist and state-mate Sarita Devi, who, after a short stint in professional boxing, is back to the amateur bracket. The former World champion in 60 kg was keen to make her return successful. “The professional boxing was a good experience, but it is very tough.

The level is very high but right now my full focus is on participating in Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.”

Sarita added, “The high you get from representing your country is unmatched. I don’t’ want to let go the opportunity to represent my country.  I know I have it in me to deliver.”

The women boxers trained under the new coach Stephane Cottalord and experienced GS Sandhu.

The 22-member Indian women boxing team will be travelling to Ireland for the International Female Boxing sparring camp from August 22-29.

“There will be 10 countries participating. So, it is a good opportunity for Indian boxers to train with some world class boxers. Both Mary and Sarita are making a comeback into the side. We have some very talented youngsters also with us. They can learn a lot from these two. We have important events coming up next (Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in 2018). We are all working towards that,” Sandhu said.
