JD(S) may sever ties with Cong in BBMP

JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda on Monday hinted that his party may not continue its support to the Congress in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike.

Gowda told reporters here that the Congress, despite repeated appeals by the JD(S), had failed to address rampant corruption in the Palike.

The JD(S) had helped the Congress come to power in the BBMP two years ago, despite the BJP having gained a majority in the elections. With a mere 14 corporators, the JD(S) had upset the BJP’s prospects, giving the Congress an upper hand.

However, over the last few months, the JD(S) has been unhappy with the Congress over several issues, including its disgruntlement with the Rajarajeshwarinagar MLA Munirathna for “harassing” one of its corporators.

With the Congress not paying heed to any of the JD(S)’ demands, the party had taken revenge against it by ensuring its defeat during the no-trust vote against Legislative Council chairman D H Shankarmurthy two months ago.

Admitting that he was conflicted about continuing support to the Congress, Gowda said that his son and party’s state president H D Kumaraswamy would take a final call on the matter. Taking a dig at the Congress, he said that his party had not signed a “bond paper” committing its support to the Congress.
