Ban on sand mining lifted in Udupi

Finally, the district is heaving a sigh of relief as the ban on sand mining in the district has been lifted and the district administration has taken measures for the resumption of sand mining activities.

Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis told DH that the district administration has approved 130 applications and has permitted  manual sand removal in CRZ area.

A meeting has been called to decide about the remaining 30 applications by the committee set up for monitoring the sand mining in the district. The committee is headed by the DC.

She said that apart from the 30 applications, the remaining four, which were rejected owing to various legal charges against the applicants, also be considered in the meeting.

She said other than the existing applications, the district administration has received a few hundred new applications. A separate committee has been set up to scrutinise these applications and will decide about the permission in the later stage, she said.

The sand removal was resumed at Paduthonse. It is expected to start in at least six-seven areas from tomorrow.The sand extractor at Paduthonse had paid the required amount of fees on August 31.
