<p>Former prime minister and MP H D Deve Gowda on Thursday, said, “If water is not released, the farmers of Tamil Nadu will stage a semi-nude protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. But the farmers of Karnataka are patient and take their lives because they suffer from low self-esteem, due to lack of support from the state government.”<br /><br />Addressing media after visiting the Hemavathy dam in Gorur, Gowda said, 6,130 cusecs of water is being released every day from the Hemavathy reservoir. “If this continues till September 30, Hassan district will face drinking water crisis. Only Hemavathy reservoir is being targeted to release water to Tamil Nadu,” he opined.<br /><br />Pointing out that 23 tmcft of water was released from the Hemavathy dam to Tamil Nadu last year, affecting scores of farmers here, Gowda said, the government should take necessary action and also, present an appropriate argument before the court for the welfare of the farmers.<br /><br />Gowda questioned the double standards of the government in releasing water. Compared to KRS, Harangi and Kabini dams, the outflow from Hemavathy dam is more, he said.<br /><br />The water available now in Hemavathy dam is 10.42 tmcft. If water is released in a similar manner up to <br />September 30, just 2.8 tmcft will be available. The reservoirs in the state are not benefiting the farmers here. Hemavathy dam is not constructed only for the benefit of Holenarasipur farmers, but to provide water to the people of Tumakuru, Mandya, Mysuru and Hassan districts, Gowda said.<br /><br />The government should consider the issue seriously. It should wake up before the court issues an order to release water to Tamil Nadu. “With a verdict expected to be announced in the next two weeks, I am worried about the future,” he said.<br /><br />Former MLC Patel Shivaram, JD(S) district president Lingesh, and CMC president H S Anil Kumar were present.<br /> <br /><br /> </p>
