Shoaib gives different names of father

A fresh row surfaced on Saturday. The name of Shoaib’s late father in the ‘talaqnama’ of Shoaib and Ayesha is different from the one on the invitation of his April 15 wedding with Sania. While Shoaib’s critics were quick to point a finger at him as yet another instance of “cheating”, others assert that it was not a big issue.

Shoaib’s father’s name in the marriage and divorce certificates is given as Malik Saleem Hussain, while the marriage invitation by the Mirza family gives it as Malik Faqeer Hussain. Shoaib’s passport mentions his father as Malik Faqeer Hussain. On the face of it, legal experts here believe that this could amount to furnishing wrong information in a legal document (divorce certificate).

But, those who brokered the divorce point out that the names on Shoaib-Ayesha’s marriage and divorce certificates should be same. Congress leader Abid Rasool Khan, who was involved in the compromise, pointed out that there would have been a problem if the names were different in the marriage and divorce certificates. Even this could be corrected by giving an affidavit with the correction. Besides, there is a practice among Muslims to use different names like the official name and a “pet name”.
