New machines to fill city's potholes, level roads

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will use Micro Milling machines to fill potholes on the city's roads.

The civic body has taken the decision as Rapid Set and Python machines — used earlier to fill the potholes — did not give the desired results. Using the Micro Milling machines will cost the BBMP Rs 80 lakh. "Our engineers will identify the spots where the base is weak. We will strengthen the base and mill the road,” B S Prahallad, Superintending Engineer, Road and Infrastructure and TVCC, BBMP, said.

The Micro Milling machine was used on Ballari Road on a trial basis on Thursday. "Some modifications have to be made in the machine to make it adapt to the city's roads and give better results," Prahallad said.

On both the edges of every road, two niches will be dug to let the water drain. The method will not only prevent water from stagnating on the road but also avoid potholes. The machines, sourced from Pune, will ensure micro-surfacing of soil, which will avoid the patchwork of potholes.

"Commuters are uncomfortable with the patchwork of potholes. Milling will avoid this since there will not be any layers and the road will be levelled," Prahallad said.

There are 9,400-odd potholes across the city, out of which the civic body claims to have filled 17,862 square metres of the area.

Prakash Kumar, a road user, questioned the BBMP's claims that it has filled potholes. "Where has it done it? How is possible when it is evident that there are potholes all over the city," he asked.
