Election to 96 GPs in Kodagu on May 12

88 polling booths have been identified as sensitive

There are total of 98 GPs in Kodagu district. Since the term of Ponnampete and Gonikoppalu GPs in Virajpet taluk will end in January, 2011, the election will be held in 96 other GPs excluding these two. Madikeri taluk has 22 GPs, Virajpete taluk has 34 GPs and Somwarpet has 40 GPs.

Elections will be held for the posts of 1,213 members at 438 booths. As many as 112 booths have been set up in Madikeri taluk, followed by 159 in Virajpet and 167 in Somwarpet. As many as 88 polling booths have been identified as sensitive booths along with 48 hyper sensitive booths in the district.

In Madikeri, there are 19 sensitive and 12 hyper sensitive booths, in Virajpet there are 33 sensitive and 20 hyper sensitive booths while in Somwarpet, there are 36 sensitive and 15 hyper sensitive booths. Madikeri taluk has 283 posts for GP members, Virajpet has 445 posts and Somwarpet has 485 posts.

There are as many as 3,21,599 voters, of which 1,49,857 are men and 1,59,154 are women.  There are 408 election constituencies in Kodagu district of which 104 are in Madikeri, 153 are in Virajpet and 151 are in Somwarpet taluk.

Election will be held for post of 24 members at Siddapur GP in Virajpet taluk, which is the highest. Likewise, Garvale in Somwarpet and Makkandur in Madikeri GP have 7 members each, which is the lowest.


Of the 1,213 seats, 164 posts have been reserved for Scheduled Caste, 147 for Scheduled Tribe, 313 for Backward (A), 95 for backward (B) and 494 for general category. As many as 96 election officers and 96 Assistant Election Officers have been deputed.

Madikeri taluk will have 22 Election Officers and 22 Assistant Election Officers, Virajpet will have 34 Election Officers and same number of Assistant Election Officers while Somwarpet will have 40 Election Officers and Assistant Election Officers each.
