“India is the only country in the entire world that won freedom from its colonial master without much violence. The philosophy of ‘Ahimsa’ (non-violence) that was preached by Mahatma Gandhi was reason behind this”, said District In-Charge & Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash Patil.

He was speaking after inaugurating All Religion Prayer Meet and Sadbavana Geeta Gayana programme organised on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi at DC office auditorium here, on Monday. The programmes were jointly organised by district administration, Department of Information & Public relations and Bharat Seva Dal. He also recalled contributions of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri whose birth anniversary also falls on October 2.

“During the independence movement, people of the entire nation supported Gandhiji and followed his footsteps. Gandhiji, who fought and won independence for the country through ‘satyagraha,’ ‘ahimsa’ and mass agitation, gave the message of peace to the entire human world and was truly a great man”, he added.

“Everybody should imbibe and inculcate the principles preached by the father of the nation in our lives. We should strive to establish Ram Rajya, the dream of Gandhiji.”

Gandhiji had a lot of concern for cleanliness and dedicated his life for the service of people. He was also concerned about the well-being of the untouchables.

He also recalled the contributions of Shastri and said that the former prime minister was extremely honest in discharging his duties.
