'Be comfortable in whatever you wear'

Last Updated 05 October 2017, 16:14 IST

Farah Khan Ali is an orator of stories and a jewelled alchemist who moulds her thoughts into mastery and exquisite gems into jewellery.

Most of her jewellery is worn by celebrities across the globe, including Beyonce, Serena Williams, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra.

She is in the city to showcase her new collection ‘Elysian Dreams’ at Shimmer, UB City. Farah talks about her new collection to Anila Kurian.

What’s ‘Elysian Dreams’ about?

It’s a festive collection that is perfect for a cocktail party and bridalwear. These are statement pieces that help one stand out in the crowd. It’s inspired by nature where I’ve used bird designs. I wanted to create something traditional yet contemporary at the same time.

Was it a tedious process?

Well, any collection takes about six months to come in place. Everything from sourcing the gems to finishing the product is a long process but worth the result.

Many celebrities have worn your creations. Who do you think wore it best?

All of them have pulled it off quite well but I love it when Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone wear them. They embody the confidence and grace a woman has.

Who is your muse?

A woman who is not only glamorous but also a mind of her own. A woman who is confident in her own abilities. Swara Bhaskar is one such person and I would love to see her in more of my work.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

My mother. She has always been the motivating factor and has pushed me to excel in everything I did. My dad is also very supportive. He taught me to never give up.

You’ve already made a name for yourself but what kind of designer do you want to be known as?

Someone who creates things that are unique, fun, alive and are passed on to generations with a sea of memories. I believe that jewellery should be worn and not kept in lockers. There’s a reason why they are gifted to people. Each piece captures moments and memories.

What are some of your must-haves this festive season?

My parrot earrings; they are playful and can be paired with both Indian and western outfits. Chokers are also a must as they are very feminine.

Something one shouldn’t wear this festive season?

Be comfortable in whatever you wear but don’t overdo it. Have one item in your outfit that will be the focus and match everything else accordingly.
Making a style statement is important.

What’s a day in your life like?

It revolves around my kids and their schedules. When that is sorted, I try to coordinate some things at work. I’m also a fitness enthusiast. It’s a busy day but I try to balance everything accordingly and give my 100 percent in everything I do.

Something you wish you had done differently...

I wish I had paid more attention to Math classes! I wouldn‘t have struggled to take care of my accounts now (laughs).
