The rich tradition of north Karnataka was unveiled on the occasion of ‘Sheegi Hunnime’ which was celebrated with festive fervour across Dharwad district on Thursday. As a mark of respect, the farmers along with their family members visited their fields, performed puja, and offered food to the land. In this way, they expressed their gratitude to ‘Bhoomi Tayi’.

The women folks dressed in traditional attire prepared various kinds of mouth-watering authentic north Karnataka dishes, and took them to the fields.

Performing rituals
After performing the rituals, all the family members sat at one place and ate the food. This was a common scene in almost all the fields in Dharwad district. Kharakadabu, roti, green salads, chatnis, various kinds of bhajis, sweet dishes like holige, were the hot favourites.

Of all the festivals practiced in north Karnataka, Sheegi Hunnime too is one of the important festival which is celebrated with all the family members, relatives, and friends. As the region was caught in the clutches of drought from last three years, the farmers were in distress and not very enthusiastic to return to their lands which were almost barren.

However, the Rain Gods had shown some mercy on the district farmers during the kharif season and almost 63% sowing was completed.

Standing crops
The standing crops welcomed the farmers on Sheegi Hunnime day and the farmers were seen joyous looking at the lush green fields.

Moreover, the incessant rains which lashed during the month of September, has encouraged the farmers to go for rabi sowing and hence, the farmers are leaving no stone unturned seeking blessings of Rain God and Mother Earth.

The kids too were found enjoying the day by going around in the fields and in knowing the importance of this festival.
