Thundershowers lash North Karnataka districts

Several districts in North Karnataka received heavy showers, accompanied by thunder and lightning, while the south interior districts had some respite from the showers on Friday.

Parts of Gadag district, including Nargund, Ron and Mundargi, experienced moderate to heavy rain for over two hours on Friday.

Downpour threw life out of gear in Nargund town and several villages in the taluk. Several muddy houses have suffered partial damage in the rain. The overflowing Tungabhadra river has flooded the paddy fields at Hesaruru, Korlahalli, Gangapur, Singtalur, Hammige and surrounding villages in Mundaragi taluk.

The ready-for-harvest jowar, maize, sunflower crop on a vast tract of land on either side of the Singtalur Lift Irrigation scheme canal is under water.

Thunderstorm lashed Chittapur taluk in Kalaburagi district on Friday. A woman was struck dead by lightning at Bennur (B) village. Eramma Nagappa Naikodi (28), along with her husband, was returning home from in a bullock cart when the lightning struck her. Nagappa escaped unhurt, the police said.



Downpour for 45 minutes in Sedam town left the KSRTC bus stand inundated with rainwater. Several villages in the taluk too received good spell of rain on Friday afternoon.

Four students of Government Primary School at Malagali village in Saundatti taluk, Belagavi district, were admitted to a government hospital after they got panicked due to the lightning strike near the school on Friday. According to Education department officials, the students are recovering from the shock.

Chitradurga town witnessed moderate to heavy rain on Friday. The showers left many roads flooded, causing inconvenience to the motorists and the pedestrians. The water level in historic Santhehonda has increased following copious rain in the last few days.

The works on the proposed solar park in Pavagad taluk, Tumakuru district, were stalled due to the flooding of the park caused by heavy rain in last few days. Parts of Kolar district also received intermittent showers on Friday.

Parts of Mysuru, Mandya and Hassan districts experienced intermittent rain on Thursday night and Friday. Several houses have collapsed at Madhugiri Koppal, Marulaiahanakoppal and Agrahara in Hunsur taluk. However, no casualties have been reported.

Heavy rain lashed Mangaluru on Friday evening. Though the sky remained overcast throughout the day, sudden showers lashed parts of the city at 6 pm.
