A Congress member of Bengaluru Urban Zilla Panchayat was assaulted over a suspected land dispute at Kittaganoor in Mahadevapura Assembly constituency on Wednesday morning.

K V Jayaram, who represents Avalahalli in the zilla panchayat, was driving alone when a group of men in another vehicle waylaid his car around 10.30 am. In the melee, his car brushed against a tree and a few men got off the other vehicle.

The group then attacked him with rods and machetes. A few local residents who witnessed the attack called the Avalahalli police and tried to catch the assailants but in vain. Jayaram sustained injuries to his chest and was taken to a private hospital where he is said to be out of danger.

Police said the attackers — identified as Manjunath and his associates — were acting at the behest of one Shekhar. The motive appears to be to threaten Jayaram to stay away from a land dispute involving Shekhar, police added. Manjunath is wanted in several criminal cases.

Based on Jayaram’s complaint, police have registered a case of attempted murder and are hunting for Shekhar, Manjunath and others.
