Sushma,Singapore counterpart discuss new areas of ties

Sushma, Singapore Foreign Minister meet

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan met here on Tuesday to discuss the new areas of bilateral cooperation between New Delhi and the city state.

Sushma and Balakrishnan co-chaired the fifth meeting of the India-Singapore Joint Ministerial Committee for Bilateral Cooperation. They reviewed the state of bilateral relations and discussed new areas of cooperation.

"Strengthening our warm bonds of friendship. EAM@SushmaSwaraj welcomes Foreign Minister @VivianBala of Singapore to India," Raveesh Kumar, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, posted on Twitter.

"Expanding our strategic partnership. EAM @SushmaSwaraj & Singapore FM @VivianBala at the 5th Joint Ministerial Committee Meeting in N.Delhi (New Delhi)," he added in another tweet.

The Foreign Minister of Singapore arrived in New Delhi for a two-day visit to India. He is likely to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi later on Tuesday.

He will travel to Guwahati in Assam on Wednesday. He will be hosted for lunch by Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal. Balakrishnan and Sonowal will also witness the signing of agreements to kickstart project implementation for the North East Skills Centre (NESC) in Guwahati.

The NESC is Singapore's third skills centre in India and will contribute to the development of the north-eastern region of the country.
