Karnataka bags national cycling championship

Karnataka cyclists team bagged the general championship in the 22nd national cycling championship which concluded in Jamkhandi in Bagalkot district on Tuesday.

The State cyclists continued their winning streak in the national cycling championship by obtaining the general championship for the fourth time continuously. The Railways and the Maharashtra teams won the second and the third places respectively in the championship.

The State team cyclists secured 73 points by winning seven gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals in the cycling championship while Railways team cyclists (runners up) got 37 points by bagging four gold, two silver and one bronze medals and Maharashtra team cyclists obtained 33 points by getting five gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

In men's category criterium race held on the last day, Krishna Naikodi won the first place while in women's category 30 km race, Railways Manorama Devi bagged gold medal.

Railways team Shridhar Savanur and Manipur team Sonali bagged Rs one lakh cash prize each by winning the first place in men's and women's category six km cycling race respectively. Services team Abdul and Satvik who won the second and the third places respectively in men's category race, got Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 cash prizes respectively.

In the women's category, State's cyclist Megha Gugada who missed the first place by a whisker, bagged Rs 50,000 cash price and Railways Poula Chaudhari who won the third place, got Rs 25,000 cash prize.

Concluding prog

The 22nd national road cycling championship was organised by Jamkhandi's Kannada Sangha in association with the Cycling Federation of India as part of the golden jubilee of the Sangha. Cyclists from various States took part in the cycling championship. The four-day event entertained the sports lovers.

Water Resources Minister M B Patil presented the prizes to the winners in the concluding programme held on Tuesday.
