WhatsApp outage triggers panic

Triggering virtual panic, social chat platform WhatsApp went off from smartphones worldwide on Friday morning. Disbelief morphed into extreme mirth as social media exploded in jokes, mostly at WhatsApp's expense.

The global outage lasted an hour. Besides India, it affected Europe, the Middle East, Philippine, the US and parts of Africa. Frantically seeking the reason, thousands of WhatsApp addicts took to Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms.

With over 200 million users, WhatsApp is big in India. Owned by Facebook, the messaging platform has over one billion users globally.

Friday's outage is the second such in the last three months for WhatsApp. On August 31, several users in Europe, Brazil and Mexico had reported a breakdown. There was no official explanation from Facebook for the outage till late Friday evening.
