Couple hit the road, ride 2,000 km to participate in swimming tourney

The zeal with which Anand Singh Shekhawat, 65, and his wife Krishna Shekhawat, 59, rode nearly 2,000 km from Rajasthan's Kota to Mysuru to participate in the 14th National Masters Swimming Championship speaks volumes of their passion for the sport. The couple represented Rajasthan in the swimming competition being held at Chamundi Vihar Stadium in the city.

The couple rode their Royal Enfield bullet bike for 2,000 km over four days from Kota to Mysuru. The couple says that they want to enjoy the beauty of nature and thus go on bike rides. "When foreigners travel miles to enjoy India's beauty, why shouldn't we?" the couple asks.

The couple rides only during daytime and relaxes after nightfall. Singh rides the bike at a speed of 80-90 km per hour. He said that during their journey, he faced difficulty to ride on a few roads due to the poor condition of the stretches. "The roads were damaged severely near Satar in Maharashtra due to heavy rainfall and we could ride only 100 km a day there," he said.

The Shekhawat couple said that regular swimming and exercise keeps them physically fit making their ride easy. "Since we are physically fit, riding becomes easy," the couple said.

Not the first journey

This is not the first ride that the couple has undertaken to participate in the swimming competition as in 2014, they rode to Kalaburagi and in 2015 to Bhopal to participate in the swimming championships.

Amidst opposition

The couple's children, however, are opposed to their parents riding the bike for such long distances but the couple manages to hoodwink them into accepting their desire to take up expeditions. "We inform our children about our journey only after we come halfway," the couple said. This time, the couple informed their children only after they rode for almost 500 km from Kota.
