Did BBMP suspend three engineers to cover up shoddy pothole filling?

Two days after the official deadline to make the city roads pothole-free ended, BBMP authorities have suspended three road engineers for shoddy work.

Amruth Kumar Solanki –working engineer at C V Raman Nagar zone, Saifudeen - assistant engineer at Shivajinagar sub division- and Mallinatha Malkapura –assistant engineer at Banaswadi ward- were suspended for apparent negligence in carrying out the road works at their respective areas.

"Their work was not up to satisfaction," BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad offered as the reason for their suspension, though the pothole menace seems fairly widespread in the city.

The suspension raised questions over BBMP's criteria for action against erring officials.

On Tuesday, DH  team counted not less than 236 potholes in a small stretch of road in central business district, proving that the drive to make the city pothole-free was ineffectual, to put it mildly.

Even in areas where potholes had been filled, commuters doubted how long the patchwork would stay. "Obviously, they have done a pretty poor job," Sujay S, residing in Nayandahalli, said. "We will not be surprised if the holes pop open within a month."

The Commissioner –maintaining studious silence over the shoddy patch up job- said the BBMP would be asphalting the roads soon.

"The wet mix will not last long, but we had to do it as a quick fix solution," Prasad said, admitting that new potholes have been identified. "We have taken up the asphalting of roads in 575 km of roads."

Mayor R Sampath Raj, however, insisted that all potholes have been plugged and the city is free of the menace.

Prasad said the civic body is planning to develop a 'Pothole Reporter' app which citizens can use to report potholes.

The complaints from citizens made through the app would be resolved in 48 hours, the BBMP Commissioner added. "If more complaints emanate from a particular ward, then the ward engineer would be suspended," he added.
