Posing as an NRI from the US, a conman duped a 29-year-old woman and made away with Rs 2.9 lakh luring her with a gift cheque worth $18,000 (Approx Rs 11,77,000).

The victim, who worked at a private firm in the city, had uploaded her profile on a leading matrimonial website earlier in August. Later, a man who claimed to be Mohammed Abdul, approached her online and told her he was worked for a leading firm in New Jersey, US.

After a few rounds of conversation, Abdul proposed to marry the victim after coming to India. A few days ago, he called her claiming that he had sent a surprise gift by courier and ended the call.

The victim was excited when a woman, claiming to be from a courier company, called her to inform that there was a gift cheque for her from abroad worth $18,000.

The caller confirmed that the cheque was in the victim's name and also verified her postal address. She then said that the cheque would be shipped to her address soon and for that, she had to pay Rs. 2.9 lakh towards 18% GST.

The victim transferred the amount online to a bank account number that was intimated to her.
