Manmohan Singh lying on Narmada issue: Gujarat CM

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani hit out at former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, accusing him of lying to the people of Gujarat on the issue of Narmada.

"It is with sadness I have to say this that such a senior person is lying to people of the state on Narmada. He had said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had never met him on the issue of Narmada when he was the chief minister. It is wrong. Modiji had written to him on the issue and met Manmohanji in Ahmedabad too on the issue," Vijay Rupani told mediapersons.

The issue of Narmada waters has always been a sentimental issue with people of Gujarat. Considered the 'Lifeline of Gujarat,' Narmada waters are said to irrigate lakhs of acres of land and provide drinking water across Gujarat, including parched areas of Saurashtra and Kutch. The ruling BJP, which is facing stiff opposition from various quarters this Assembly polls, hopes that this issue raised by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh can provide it much needed ammunition to hit out at Congress.

He also gave copies of correspondence between then chief minister Narendra Modi and Manmohan Singh. "Modiji as chief minister of Gujarat wrote to then Prime Minister on January 17, May 17 and June 21, 2011 as well as on August 3, 2013 and September 7, 2013. Modiji also raised the issue during the visit of Manmohan Singhji to Ahmedabad on March 26, 2011 and again discussed it during a 45-minute meeting on February 2, 2013, when Modiji met the former Prime Minister on important issues related to the state, including raising the height of the dam," Rupani said.

Anti-Gujarat

The chief minister claimed that the previous Congress governments at the Centre were anti-Gujarat and never approved the project, on the pretext of environment. He said that even during his stint as Rajya Sabha member from 2006-12, Rupani had met up with Manmohan Singh twice with a delegation of parliamentarians from the state led by L K Advani. "The Prime Minister had even asked, '....still it has not happened?' He used these exact words. So, to say that Modiji did not meet him on Narmada issue is a blatant lie," he said. "The people of Gujarat would never tolerate this and would take revenge for anti-Gujarat sentiments of Congress," he warned.

Rupani demanded clarification from Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi as well as former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue.
