High alert sounded in Kodagu ahead of Tipu Jayanti

BJP, Bajrang Dal, VHP, and Hindu Jagarana Vedike members have appealed to the district administration not to go ahead with the Tipu Jayanti celebrations.

Untoward incidents were reported during the celebration in 2015. Last year, Tipu Jayanti was observed peacefully. Police are on high alert to ensure that the programme passes off peacefully.

There is stiff opposition to Tipu Jayanti in South Kodagu especially Virajpet, Ponnampete and Gonikoppa. In spite of the police denying permission, a large number of people took part in a protest at Ponnampete on Wednesday.

Security has likewise, been strengthened in Kodagu district. Senior police officials have inspected the check posts at Kannur and Kasargod as well, sources said. Check posts have been opened at Maldare, Kutta, Anechowkuru, Siddapura, Koppa, Shirangala, Kodlipete, Shanivarasanthe and Sampaje. All vehicles are being checked before their entry to the district. Further, RAF from Tamil Nadu is camping in the district. A total of 249 CCTV cameras have been installed at strategic locations.

Homestay and lodge owners have been asked to inform the nearest police station if they suspect the movement of anybody in their premises. Permissions have already been denied for public meetings.
