Liquor sales go up in Kodagu

In 2008-09, the target was to sell 7,18,404 cases and 7,06,419 cases were sold, thus achieving 98.33 per cent target. In 2009-10, the target was to sell 7,54,330 cases and the achievement is 7,22,618 cases, said Excise department Deputy Commissioner C L Jayaram.

In the last two years, liquor was sold less during monsoon. However, between March and December, the sale of liquor was above the target. In 2008-09, the target was to sell 60,385 cases.

However, 61,669 cases have been sold. In January, the target was 58,497 cases, while 66,837 cases have been sold.  In February, the target was 56,833 cases while 68,910 was sold. In February, the target was to sell 56,833 cases and 68,910 cases were sold. In March instead of 62,161 cases, 62,787 cases were sold.

In 2009-10, instead of 64,264 cases, only 62,981 cases were sold in December 2010.  In January, 64,760 cases were sold, thus registering a success of 102.21 per cent. In February, 66,261 cases were sold instead of 61,458 cases. In March, the taget was to sell 63,359 cases. However, 76,260 cases were sold, he informed.

In 2008-09, 1,73,707 cases were sold in Madikeri taluk while  1,76,579 cases were sold  in 2009-10. In Somwarpet taluk, 2,26,792 cases were sold in 2008-09. However, it was increased to 2,40,086 cases in 2009-10.

In Virajpet taluk, 3,05,923 cases were sold in 2008-09 and in 2009-10, 3,05,953 cases were sold.  Jayaram said the target is to sell 8,17,331 cases in 2010-11.


He said between April 2008 and March 2010, 1,978 raids have been conducted by the department against illicit liquor units. Cases have been filed against 68 persons.
