Rain bounty: groundwater level up by 16.3 ft in Mysuru dist

Copious rainfall this monsoon has increased the ground water level by an average of 16.3 feet across the district. The quality of water has also been improved.

Due to severe drought in the district since the last three years, the groundwater level had depleted to an alarming level. While the average water level was recorded at 35.48 ft in January 2016, it had depleted to 47.23 ft by January 2017. But, the water level increased after August.

Out of seven taluks in the district, Mysuru taluk has received good rain compared to others. The water level had increased by 16.3 ft. HD Kote taluk recorded least with only an increase of 1.41 ft, compared to previous years.

When compared to 2015, 2016, the average groundwater level at six taluks has improved except Hunsur, which has remained the same.

The water level at the observatory borewell at Jayapura in Mysuru taluk has increased to 29.61 ft. While an observatory well in Taragur village in T Narsipur, has seen an increase of 0.16 ft, the well in Kavalande in Nanjangud taluk, witnessed 1.77 ft depletion. Similarly, a well in Bommanahalli in KR Nagar taluk, Siddalingapura in Mysuru taluk and Kanakala in Periyapatna taluk is at ground level.

According to the authorities, good rainfall across the district during the monsoon has increased the groundwater level. Besides good rains, a majority of the tanks and lakes were filled and it helped in recharging borewells. Majority of the farmers utilise rainwater for cultivation purpose and are not dependent on borewells.

According to an official, while water level at 94% borewells has been increased, the water level at 2% wells have remained constant and 4% witnessed depletion.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) authorities have predicted six millimetre (MM) rainfall in the district between November 16 and November 19. Parts of the district would receive good rain. The day temperature is expected to be between 29 and 30 degree Celsius on day time and night temperature is expected to be 17 to 19 degrees. The relative humidity in the morning hours is expected to be 84% -88% and afternoon relative humidity is expected to be in the range 57% - 66 %.
