AAP names 9 more nominees for Gujarat polls

A month after announcing the first list of 11 candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Gujarat, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday released a second list of nine more candidates.

The constituencies that the AAP wants to contest from   include Botad, Katargam, Rajkot (East), Surat (East), Palanpur, Jamnagar (Rural), Gandhidham in Saurashtra-Kutch region, state capital Gandhinagar (North) and Karanj in Ahmedabad. Of these, six seats are held by ruling BJP and remaining three are with Congress.

This is for the first time that the party led by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is trying its electoral fortunes in the state. Though initially AAP was planning to contest from all the 182 seats, the electoral setback AAP faced in Punjab and Goa saw the party go on the backfoot. It is only after a lot of persuasion from the local unit of the party that the AAP decided to contest the polls.

'Good' nominees

Announcing the list, Gopal Rai, party in-charge for Gujarat, said that AAP had received applications from "good" persons to contest polls from more than 100 seats in the state. "Our election committee is scrutinising these applications and we will take a call on fighting polls from more seats going forward," he said.

Rai said unlike the two major parties in the state – BJP and Congress – that are using money power for propaganda, AAP is using door-to-door campaign, Mohalla sabhas, padyatras to reach out to people and propagate achievements of the Delhi government.
