CPM worker attacked in Kerala

Amid tension between activists of Kerala's ruling CPM and Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), an armed attack left a CPM worker injured, in Kattakkada on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.

The incident happened at about 7 am as Sasikumar, a local CPM worker and agent of the party mouthpiece Deshabhimani, was heading for work on his motorbike.

In a video which captured the incident, two bike-borne men are seen chasing Sasikumar and one of them attacking him with what appears to be an iron rod. After falling off the bike, Sasikumar tried to escape even as the attacker chased him and assaulted him again.

Sasikumar is admitted in the Neyyattinkara Taluk Hospital.

Local CPM leadership has alleged SDPI's hand in the attack. The incident came two days after clashes between CPM and SDPI workers in Chavara, in Kollam district.

The clashes left men in both camps with injuries. The incident also triggered tension in Thiruvananthapuram city late on Friday after a protest march taken out by SDPI activists to the State Secretariat turned violent.

Reports said State Police Chief Loknath Behera briefed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on the assault and follow-up action.
