Choose scholars with leadership qualities for VCs: Chandrashekar

Mysuru:Former minister B K Chandrashekar, on Monday, said scholars with leadership qualities should be made vice-chancellors of the universities. He said that the existing guidelines for the appointment of VCs should change.

At a press conference, here, Chandrashekar said, the vice chancellors should be scholars with leadership qualities to strengthen the varsities with moral values.

"The varsities will command great respect when personalities such as Kuvempu, who served as VC of University of Mysore, head institutions. The VCs should not have any political affiliations," he said.

Explaining about the appointment process of VCs, he said, the search committee scrutinises the applications and short-lists three names to be forwarded to the Governor to finalise one name. According to Chandrashekar, there are no proper guidelines for the appointment of VC and the existing rules should be changed to maintain transparency.

Chandrashekar opined that the search committee, comprising the Directors of Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Indian Institute of Management (IIM), should be formed to appoint the VCs.

He appreciated Higher Education Minister Basavaraja Rayareddy for his concern to eradicate corruption in the varsities. The responsibility of construction of buildings should be given to the PWD, he said.

"The Kannada University, in Hampi, was established to promote literature and research works. Writer and founder vice-chancellor of the Kannada University Chandrashekhara Kambara made it proud. It should not be brought under the purview of Karnataka State Universities Act, as it needs autonomous status," he said.
