Gujarat polls: BJP's final list a mix of experience, continuity and winnability

The ruling BJP announced its sixth and final list of 34 candidates on Monday morning, just before the final day of filing nominations began.

The final list has a mix of experience, continuity and winnability. The surprising aspect of the announcement of the list was that it was made public even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in the state to launch his election blitzkrieg.

Among the key candidates, Jaynarayan Vyas, a former minister in the Keshubhai Patel ministry and party spokesperson for long has again been fielded from Siddhpur.

In the last polls, Vyas lost to Balwantsinh Rajput, who has now jumped ship from the Congress to the BJP. Kaushik Patel, former energy minister in the Keshubhai Patel government, too, has fielded from Naranpura constituency in Ahmedabad.

In Ahmedabad, the BJP has fielded 12 of the 16 sitting legislators. A BJP stronghold, the party currently holds 14 of the 16 seats in the biggest city of the state.

The only changes that have been made to the latest list are  Ghatlodia, from where former chief minister Anandiben Patel was elected. Her confidante Bhupendra Patel has been fielded from her constituency instead. It was rumoured that the party could field her daughter Anar Patel from Ghatlodia.

The other surprising inclusion is that of former home minister Rajni Patel from Bechraji in north Gujarat. Rajni had to resign as home minister of the state after the Patel quota stir turned violent.

The key exclusions in the final name include the names of Mahendrasinh Vaghela,  son of former chief minister Shankarsinh Vaghela and Minister of State for Finance Rohit Patel from Anand.

Mahendrasinh was slated to be given a ticket from the Bayad constituency and was expected to join the BJP. However, his name is missing from the list. Instead, the party has fielded Adesinh Chauhan from Bayad.
