Gujarat polls: Dalit youth leader Jignesh to contest as independent candidate

Dalit youth leader from Gujarat Jignesh Mevani on Monday said that he would be contesting the  upcoming Assembly polls from Vadgam constituency in Banaskantha district of Gujarat as an independent candidate.

"Friends, I'm contesting from Vadgam-11 seat of Banaskantha district of Gujarat as an independent candidate. We shall fight, we shall win," he tweeted on Monday.

Mevani is one  among the three youth leaders, other than Patel quota stir leader Hardik Patel and OBC Thakor Sena leader Alpesh Thakore, who has emerged as the face of the current elections after a series of agitations that the state has witnessed  over the last two-and-a-half years.

Unlike Alpesh, who joined the Congress party and Hardik, who has indirectly announced his support for  the same in the Assembly polls, Jignesh has claimed equidistance from all the political parties.

However, he had met up with Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi during  the latter's campaign trail in south Gujarat and hit out at the ruling BJP. He said his  sole aim  is to defeat the BJP.
