Man arrested for stealing jewellery from accident victims

Police arrested a 22-year-old man for stealing jewellery from the accident victims on a pretext of helping them.

Chikkajala police recovered 288 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs 8 lakh from the suspect S Somashekar. A driver by profession he is a native of BK Nagar in Yeshwantpur.

The police said, Venugopala, a resident of Bidarakere and members of his family were returning to the city from Channarayapatna in Hassan district on November 3.

The car in which they were travelling collided with a truck near Chikkanahalli in Kunigal in the wee hours. Somashekar and his friend who was also travelling on the same route in another vehicle saw the accident and stopped to help the locals to shift the accident victims to a hospital.

Meanwhile, taking advantage of the situation, the suspect stole jewellery box from the injured.

Venugopal had registered a complaint at the Amruthur police station about the accident, but he was not aware of the stolen jewellery.

However, when Somashekar tried to pledge the jewellery to a merchant in Chikkajala, based on a tip-off police arrested him.
