JD(U) Kerala chief Veerendra Kumar to resign from RS

JD(U)  Kerala president MP Veerendra Kumar on Wednesday announced his decision to resign from the Rajya Sabha, triggering another round of speculations over his return to the CPM-led ruling coalition.

"I don't wish to continue as a Rajya Sabha member under (party president and Bihar Chief Minister) Nitish Kumar, as part of the Sangh Parivar," Kumar told reporters in Kozhikode.

He said his decision had already been conveyed to Nitish Kumar and the time of his formal resignation was only a technicality. The JD(U) state committee will soon hold a meeting to discuss ways to overcome what Kumar admitted was a "crisis" in his party.

Responding to questions on the possibilities of JD(U) moving out of the Congress-led Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) and returning to the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), Kumar said the priority now  is sorting out internal issues.

"We are still with the UDF. I did have meetings with K Krishnankutty and C K Nanu (both MLAs of JD-S, an LDF constituent) but we haven't initiated any formal talks with the LDF leadership," he said.

Earlier this month, the Election Commission recognised the Nitish Kumar-led faction of JD(U) as the official party entitled to use its election symbol. In July, a day after Nitish Kumar left the grand alliance to join hands with the BJP, Veerendra Kumar had said he was ready to resign from the Rajya Sabha to continue the party's "fight against fascist forces".

The Kerala unit under Kumar is reportedly mulling a revival of Socialist Janata (Democratic), the party he led before it merged with JD(U) in 2014. The state Congress leadership dismissed reports of the JD(U) leaving the UDF and said the party was still an integral part of the Opposition front. CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said no official talks regarding the JD(U)'s return to the LDF were on.
