The ruling AIADMK nominated former minister E Madhusudhanan as the party candidate for the December 21 R K Nagar by-poll.
The by-poll was necessitated after the death of chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
The decision was taken at the governing council meeting chaired by party coordinator and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam (OPS) and joint coordinator and Chief Minister K Palaniswami (EPS).
Earlier, the OPS faction (now merged with EPS group) had named Madhusudhanan as the candidate when the election was scheduled for April.
