We openers have a good rapport, says Vijay

It is rare when all three openers of a team are in top form. Murali Vijay, KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan -- all three have scored in the ongoing series against Sri Lanka and are available for selection for the third and last Test here. Despite the stiff competition, Vijay insisted they were good friends off the field.

Vijay, who was not part of the playing XI in Kolkata Test, returned with a century in Nagpur after Dhawan opted out due to family engagements. It is to be seen who opens on Saturday but the Tamil Nadu batsman  showed no anxiety over it.

"We three are very good friends off the field and it makes it much easier. It definitely unsettles the opener, who is a playing regular. Obviously, we three share a good rapport outside the field and that will help us big time in the series coming ahead and also in the future. We three are in good form," Vijay said on the eve of the match.

"We make it easier, lighter, more fun, talking about it openly and having a good chat over it rather than keeping it with yourself and making that person feel it. It is better off going in the open. Like whatever I feel or Shikhar feels, we put it out in the open so that it comes off (out) and we move forward. Basically we are fun loving people and I think we do things together and have good times outside the field, which is really helping us as a team."

Vijay was categorical in stating that they would be playing on the pitch with grass, keeping in mind the South Africa series. "It (pitch) has grass obviously and that's the pattern for the whole series. Hopefully the wicket plays good and we get a good experience before the SA tour, " he said.

Asked about the fitness of Mohammad Shami, Vijay said: "I just saw him bowling at the nets. So I think he is absolutely fit and ready to go."

Vijay, who is not the part of limited overs series, will now have three weeks before India tours South Africa in January. "I will definitely occupy myself with fitness and skill level where I want to go on and improve a little bit. Have a good training schedule and stick onto it and prepare for the big series," he said.

"We have been playing Test cricket abroad for a while now and the same members have stuck together. It's going to be very important for us to communicate and share knowledge with each other."
