Karnataka seek release of Rahul

Following K L Rahul's exclusion from the playing XI in the third and final Test against Sri Lanka in New Delhi, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has requested the BCCI to release the batsman from the national squad for the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal.

Karnataka will play Mumbai from December 7 in Nagpur and Rahul, expectedly, was not named in the 16-member squad to be led by R Vinay Kumar on Thursday. However, Shikhar Dhawan's return to the national side and Murali Vijay's century in the second Test denied Rahul a chance in the decider.

"Our secretary (Sudhakar Rao) today has spoken to the concerned officials in the BCCI about releasing Rahul for the quarterfinal match. The process is on. We are awaiting a response from the BCCI," Vinay Mrutyunjaya, spokesperson, KSCA, told DH on Saturday.

Rahul, who failed to impress in his first Ranji tie of the season against Hyderabad in Shivamogga, found his rhythm against Delhi. The 25-year-old struck a fluent 92 at the Alur (2) ground here in the drawn encounter before slamming a half-century in the first Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Karnataka will miss the services of another senior batsman Manish Pandey, who is named in the Indian squad for the ODI series against the Lankans but Rahul's possible return would strengthen their batting line-up.
