Cyclone Ockhi: Over 1,200 fishermen reach Maharashtra

More than 1,200 fishermen who were caught in the choppy and turbulent Arabian Sea because of Cyclone Ockhi reached the Maharashtra coast over the weekend.

"They are safe in Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts and care is being taken," Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said. While 952 fishermen in 68 boats reached Sindhudurg on Saturday, 321 fishermen in 28 boats landed in Ratnagiri on Sunday.

Fadnavis has spoken to officials of the Maharashtra Maritime Board and collectors of Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri to make all arrangements for the stranded fishermen.

"Local authorities are already with them and taking care of all arrangements to make everyone feel at home," Fadnavis tweeted. The 68 boats that reached on Saturday included 66 from Kerala and  two from Tamil Nadu.

"Maharashtra will completely look after everyone till weather permits them to go back," Fadnavis assured.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman thanked Fadnavis for helping out the stranded fishermen.
