Udupi GP polling in two phases

District has 311 sensitive and 170 hyper-sensitive polling booths

The first phase will be on May 8 for gram panchayats in Udupi and Karkala taluks and the second one on May 12 for those in Kundapur taluk.The authorities have identified 311 sensitive polling booths and 170 hyper sensitive polling booths. This include Kundapur—110,Udupi—120 and Karkala—81 sensitive booths. Hypersensitive booths include Kundapur—68, Udupi—80 and Karkala—22.

The code of conduct has already come into force. However, the code of conduct is not applicable to Town Panchayat, CMC, TMC limits.

Deputy Commissioner P Hemalatha said that that the elections will be held to 143 gram panchayats in the district. In all, there are 6,35,055 voters in the three taluks. This include 3,44,036 women and 2,91,019 men. The number of gram panchayat seats in the district is 2,323, comprising Scheduled Castes (general) 36, Scheduled Castes (women) 143, Scheduled Tribes (general) 26, Scheduled Tribes (women) 144, Backward Community ‘A’ (general) 334, Backward Community ‘A’ (women) 275, Backward Community ‘B’ (common) 131, Backward Community ‘B’ (women) 29, General Category 761, and General Category (women) 444.

She said adequate police security will be provided at all the booths. The polling will be held between 7 am and 5 pm. Nominations will be received at all the Gram Panchayats. A election officer and an assistant election officer has been deployed to each Gram Panchayat.

An Addition Election Officer has been deployed to those GP which has more than 25 members.

Election officers

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Election Tahsildar Muralidhar said as many as 143 election officers and 154 assistant election officers will supervise the election process in 749 booths. About 3,995 polling officers and D’ grade personnel will be deployed. A total 1,498 ballot boxes will be used for election. This include Kundapura—540, Udupi—652 and Karkala—306.

The notification for elections in Udupi and Karkala taluks will be issued on Monday. The last date for filing nomination papers is April 26.
Scrutiny will be done on April 27.

Last date for the withdrawal of nominations is April 29. Repolling, if necessary, will be held on May 12.

Notification in Kundapur taluk will be issued on April 21. Last date for filing nomination papers is April 28. Scrutiny will be on April 29.

Last date for withdrawal is May 3. Repolling, if necessary, will be on May 15.
The mustering, de-mustering and counting centres for gram panchayats in Udupi and Kundapur taluks are TMA Pai English Medium School and Bhandarkar’s College, respectively.

The mustering centre in Karkala taluk is the taluk office and the de-mustering and counting centre will be at BBM College.
