Hundreds of farmers took to the streets against the construction of illegal shops in K R Market by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Monday.

About 500 farmers gathered near K R Market and marched till the BBMP head office.

Chairman of Karnataka State Farmer's Association and Hasiru Sene, Kodihalli Chandrashekar, said, "The farmers wake up in the middle of the night and get flowers to sell here until 8 am. But four shops have come up in this place overnight. This has been done though BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad had issued a notice to remove illegal encroachments."

He also said that there are goons who extort money from vendors every day.

Prasad said that the BBMP had issued notices to remove the shops.

"It is illegal to construct shops in open spaces. We will ask the K R Market police to remove the shops," said Prasad.
