At least two militants and an army personnel were killed in an ongoing encounter between ultras and security forces in Qazigund area of south Kashmir's Kulgam district on Monday.

Reports said  a gunfight broke out after the militants attacked an army patrol in Bounigam area of Qazigund near the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.

After carrying out the attack, that left one soldier dead and two injured, the militants  believed to be three in number, took shelter inside a building that houses  around 12 shops as well, reports added.

A police officer said as security forces intensified the searches to trace out the hiding militants, they fired upon the forces triggering an encounter.

"Two militants, one local and a Pakistani, have been killed in the encounter so far. One more militant is believed to be hiding under the debris of the building and is firing on "the forces," he said.

He said smoke was seen billowing from the building as the army used improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to detonate it.

The slain soldier has been identified as sepoy Jitender Singh. Defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia confirmed the killing of the soldier and two militants in the encounter.

Internet services have been suspended in the area, while traffic movement remained suspended on the national highway that passes through Qazigund.

The latest encounter comes just four days after the  army killed four Jaish-e-Mohammed militants in central Kashmir's Budgam district.

Security forces have killed more than 200 militants in Kashmir this year, including around 83 locals, which is highest in the past seven years.
