Plans afoot to make Shravanabelagola plastic-free zone

The district administration is all set to create a plastic-free environment during the Bahubali Mahamastakabhisheka to be held in February 2018. It has also planned to generate revenue through scientific disposal of waste.

Lakhs of people from across the country and foreign countries are expected to visit the town during the festival to be held from February 2 to 25. As it is the onset of the summer, devotees use bottled water to quench their thirst. It is feared that if the bottles are discarded, the Jain pilgrim centre would be strewn with plastic waste.

It is estimated that around 8,000 to 10,000 bottles would be used every day at Shravanabelagola and satellite towns. In an effort to find a solution to the problem, it has been planned to dissolve the plastic and convert it into blocks and sell it to the companies. The district administration has chalked out plans in this regard. The money would be handed over the local panchayats, to be used for development works, it is said.

Arecanut leaves plates

More than 20,000 plates made out of arecanut leaves would be used every day for breakfast and lunch. The used plates would be shredded and converted into compost. Around 10 acres of land has been identified at Korenahalli, nearby.

The Rachenahalli lake is being desilted and stagnated water pumped out using German technology. The lake would be filled with purified water by the end of the month, according to sources.

Mahotsava Special Officer B N Varaprasad Reddy opined, awareness should be created among traders, roadside vendors, hotel owners and others against using plastic. They should be distributed two separate buckets to segregate wet and dry waste, he suggested.

Awareness would also be created on the website on maintaining cleanliness and hygiene. The waste would be scientifically disposed, as directed by the Deputy Commissioner, he said.
