Woman sets daughter afire, commits suicide

A 64-year-old woman immolated  her mentally retarded daughter before setting herself afire on Magadi Road, West Bengaluru, police said.    

Rangamma  poured kerosene on her daughter, Thimmamma (34), and set her afire around 10.30 am on Sunday. Moments later, she immolated herself in the same manner. Neighbours rushed to the house hearing the women's screams and took them to Victoria Hospital. Both of them had, however, 90% burns and died on Sunday night.  

Rangamma's husband Huchaiah had died earlier. She was living in a house belonging to her brother, Rangaswamy, and worked hard to take care of her daughter. Fearing that no one would take care of her daughter after her death, Rangamma decided to take the extreme step, police said.
