Rain lashes Mumbai, Konkan coast

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and coastal Konkan region received overnight rain as the cyclonic storm moved into the Arabian Sea along the coasts of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

According to the Met department, the cyclone-like conditions will continue on Tuesday.

The rain, at times bout of heavy spells, is accompanied by winds. Huge tidal waves from the Arabian Sea lashed the coast.

The IMD-Pune and the Maharashtra government have asked fishermen not to venture into the sea on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Meanwhile, nearly 800-odd fishing boats returned to harbours on Tuesday.

Schools in MMR, and Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts have been given a holiday as a precautionary measure.

Overnight, the coastal regions received around 10 to 50 mm of rainfall.

Lakhs of people who are converging in Mumbai for the December 6 Mahaparinirvan Din, the death anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar, faced severe inconvenience.

There are fewer autos and taxis in MMR but train services are operating as usual.

The Mumbai Police and the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation have been put on high alert and the situation is being constantly monitored.

More than 250 personnel from the Railway Protection Force and the Maharashtra State Security Corporation have been deployed for crowd management at important stations.
