Be Ockhi-ready, EC tells Gujarat CEO

The Election Commission on Tuesday asked the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Gujarat to brace for cyclone Ockhi, which is set to hit the coastal region of the poll-bound state.

The poll panel asked B B Swain to make "adequate, effective and fool-proof arrangements" for the smooth conduct of first phase polling for state Assembly elections on Saturday.

Swain has also been asked to report to the EC by Wednesday the arrangements made by local administration to make it sure that the cyclone does not hinder the polling process.

The EC was made aware of the possibility of Ockhi crossing South Gujarat and adjoining North Maharashtra coasts near Surat by midnight on Tuesday.

According to the Special Weather Forecast Bulletin issued by the Indian Meteorological Department, the movement of the cyclonic depression over parts of Gujarat might be accompanied by a wet spell over the next three-four days, the EC noted.
