Four-day fish exhibition takes off

Numerous varieties of fish, seashells, aquaria, decorative fish and aquatic tools are up for sale at the four-day Mathsya Mela (fish exhibition) that opened at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Friday.

Hundreds of people turned up at the venue to be part of the event that is being organised by the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries for the second time. Food stalls selling various fish dishes were an instant hit.  Dissolved oxygen sensors (devices used to check oxygen level in water) were another attraction.

The exhibition aims to raise awareness about pisciculture (fish farming) and provide access to  developmental schemes about the sector. The event also marked the six decades of the department.

"The government is providing a subsidy of Rs 2 crore to fish farmers. At the next meeting, the  Cabinet will announce a policy to support fish farmers in the inner parts of the state," Fisheries Minister Pramodh Madhwaraj said.

Rajkumar Khatri, Principal Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, said:  "Fisheries has become a good business proposition. There needs to be a public-private  partnership."
