Minister for Food and Civil Supplies U T Khader said that Veera Rani Abbakka Utsava will be held at Mysuru on January 6 and 7. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will inaugurate the Utsava.

Briefing reporters here on Saturday, he said that the Utsava will be organised jointly by Karavali Sanghagala Okkuta in Mysuru and Veerarani Abbakka Utsava Samithi at Maharaja College grounds. The Utsava will have a seminar and five achievers in various fields will be felicitated. Two plays on Rani Abbakka will be staged on the occasion. The state government has released a grant of Rs 8 lakh for the Abbakka Utsava.

"There are over 15,000 people from the coastal belt residing in Mysuru. There is a need to create awareness on Rani Abbakka across the state. Had she not fought against the Portuguese, the history of the coastal region would have been different," said Veera Rani Abbakka Utsava Samithi convener Sudhakar Shetty.

Arrangements have been made to supply food for 15,000 people at the venue. The exhibition representing the coastal culture will be part of the Utsava, he added.
