50% paddy harvest complete in Kodagu

It is paddy harvest time in Kodagu. About 50% of the harvest has been completed and farmers are expecting good yield this year.

Paddy was cultivated on 2,000 hectare in Harangi and Chikklihole catchment areas. Also, paddy harvest is in full swing at Hebbale, Koodige, Thorenooru, Siddapura gate, Shanivarasanthe, Shanthalli, Somwarpet, Ponnampete, Gonikoppa and Virajpet region as well.

Paddy has been cultivated on 11,922 hectare in Virajpet, 9,375 hectare in Somwarpet and 5600 hectare in Madikeri taluks. Compared to last year, the area under paddy cultivation had increased this year.

Agriculture Department officials said that the good rainfall has helped the farmers to cultivate paddy. The harvest would be completed by month end.

However, with the shortage of labourers, the paddy farmers have turned towards machinery. The harvest machines have arrived from Tamil Nadu and are camping in South Kodagu.
